12Jan02: Croydon v Nomads Saturday night's meeting between Croydon and Nomads proved to be an exciting encounter that once again went in favour of Nomads. Matches between the two rarely lack in spice, although they are not renowned for being high-scoring affairs. Both teams looked to be fielding full strength teams, and set out in the same way as in the first meeting between the two clubs in November. Croydon appeared to have put last week's dismal second half against Invicta behind them, and it was they who made the better start. Steve Jones scored a long shot and Kim Jones converted from under the post after confusion between Gillian Card and Jo Adams in defence. Nomads then put away five of the next six goals, including two from Jo Adams, but Croydon replied with three consecutive goals of their own. Brian Carswell levelled the scores at 6-6, but shortly before half time, Steve Jones converted his third (a penalty won by Anna Jeanes) and fourth goals of the half. Half-time score was 8-6, with the match offering rather more entertainment to the watching Invicta players than the drab score would suggest. Carswell scored the first goal of the second half, but goals from Dave Butters and Steve Jones extended the lead to 10-7, the first time either team had achieved a three goal lead. The next ten minutes probably determined the course of the match. Steve Kingsford converted a penalty for Nomads. Then Steve Green ended up on the floor for a long period with an injury. While this was happening, several Nomads players with a keen eye for the rules were quick to draw the presence of Croydon coach Paul Jeanes on the pitch to the referee's attention. Once play had resumed, Butters missed a penalty for Croydon. Nomads then scored four goals in quick succession, to build up a lead of 10-12. Butters earned himself another penalty which this time he converted. Then Nomads earned, and scored, three penalties. Both teams were venting their anger on the referee, Alan Lewis, and several players looked to be close to receiving yellow cards for dissent. Adams added another goal to make the score 11-16 in Nomads' favour, and Croydon were never able to rein this lead back in. Alison Rotheram and Steve Jones each offered some hope with two goals, but two Richard Burrows goals shortly before the end killed off the game. As in the previous meeting between the two clubs, Nomads once again demonstrated the old adage about sums, parts and wholes. Whether this team has sufficient goal-scoring power to defeat Invicta is questionable, but there is no doubt that they can make it a tough battle. Croydon will be disappointed to have lost this game after leading into half time. The timing of the break in play for Steve Green's injury, and Nomads run of goals, perhaps suggests that Croydon's concentration was disturbed rather more than Nomads'. But as a team they looked short of goals, with only three players scoring 2 or more in the game. Still, it will have been encouraging for the new match-day coach, Paul Jeanes, how much spirit the players showed throughout the game, even in defeat, and especially compared to last week's Invicta game. Croydon 2 v Nomads 2 In a match that was definitely more entertaining than the score would suggest, Croydon surprised many by bringing ex-GB player Sammy Smith into their team. Jennie Allen picked up from her 5 goals last week by scoring the first goal of the game, but Nomads replied with four straight goals, including two from ex-Croydon player Brendan Cassidy. Cassidy was in fact involved in a rare old battle (all good-natured) with Paul Jeanes all through the game. Allen added her second goal through a free throw, then Helen Eardley and Dave Hart increased Nomads' lead to 2-6. Allen added two more goals, one a penalty, to make the score Allen 4, Nomads 6. Other action included Julia Hook scoring a rare goal and Cassidy missing a penalty. Nomads went into half-time 5-8 up. Croydon scored three of the first four goals in the second half, through Amanda Furlano, Smith and Allen. But Nomads replied with three of their own, including a Dave Hart penalty after some vociferous appeals. Furlano then added her second long shot, and substitute Ryan Dring scored a long shot that didn't touch the sides of the basket. Nomads sealed the match with a Hart penalty awarded against ex-Lancaster University player Nigel Hudspith. Croydon will be pleased with the goal-scoring form of their girls, who contributed 8 of the 10 goals. In particular, Allen and the rapidly-improving Furlano scored 7 and conceded 2 against a very strong Nomads pairing that included Helen Eardley and a very competent Dutch player whose name unfortunately escaped this observer. But it is a game of eight players, and Nomads proved that as a team they are more than capable of scrapping for a well-earned victory.
