13Jan02: Kwiek 2 v Croydon 2 "Small, dusty and slippery" Westborough Sports Centre hosted this Reserve League clash in a busy weekend for Croydon's teams. Croydon were boosted by Ryan Dring's return to the starting line-up, whilst captain Paul Jeanes was absent due to refereeing commitments in Cambridge and Norwich. Coach Steve Jones deputised. Kwiek looked to field a much weaker team than the one that lost away at Royal Russell earlier in the season. Kwiek gave a good fight during the opening fifteen minutes, with goals being exchanged between the two teams and the score lying at 4-4. Croydon then pulled away scoring two easy goals, and then through a close defence managed to increase the lead further, resulting in a 4-10 half-time scoreline. Any hopes that Kwiek had of breaking back into the game after the break were soon dashed by two effortless goals from Croydon's Hudspith and Dring. Croydon never looked like being defeated from then on, and scored an impressive fifteen second half goals. The change in section line-ups seemed to benefit Croydon with both divisions scoring frequently and defending resolutely. Kwiek continued to battle, and managed to equal their first half goal tally netting another 4. The final score was 8-25, with most players scoring easily, Ryan Dring stood out at the top of the goalscoring netting seven. Amazingly Julia Hook scored a brace of goals to cap an exciting goal-scoring weekend for her personally. So Croydon continued their good recent form, however little resistance was given by a Kwiek team unused to this level. Such mis-matches do the validity of the Reserve League few favours and London clubs must be considering a return to the LDKA league, since they are sure to play the same strong teams and play fewer of the weaker ones. SuperNova 4 v Croydon 4 Dreary Latchmere Leisure Centre was the venue for this exciting 2nd Division clash early on a Sunday morning. SuperNova managed to mix up the time of the match with their players, despite it being their home game and so played the match a girl short and 2 3rd team players. Croydon were also a player short and, due to unavailability, had to field 2 1st team regulars in what proved a strong and resolute team. Honours were even early in the match with both teams trading goals that meant the score was 2-2 after 5 minutes. From then on Croydon's defence took over. A brace of 1st half goals each from Steph Robinson and new-comer Neil Paterson took Croydon into the break 6-2 up and good value for their lead. Their defensive pressure and marking of the ball out of defence had stifled SuperNova and soon the home side's heads were dropping as Croydon fought for every loose pass and every loose ball. The 2nd half continued in a similar vein with Nadia Hanine taking the aggressive defensive work a little far when her grappling with an opponent resulted in her more senior opponent ending up being thrown across the court! SuperNova were clearing lacking in shooting opportunities and ideas as Croydon tried to use the match to develop their attacking patterns and new players. Anna Jeanes weighed in with 2 goals and a hat-trick from Andy Withers ensured a comfortable victory, 9-3. Croydon's performance was encouraging for their tenacity in defence and all over the pitch. At this level, making passing difficult can result in far more possession and therefore opportunities to score. SuperNova will take little from the game, organising their lower teams better is bound to help as their players they had little time to practice before the start and found themselves with precious few chances during the game.
