27Jan02: Croydon v Trojans Croydon booked their place in the BKA Cup semi-finals after defeating Trojans in a Royal Russell goalfest. Croydon were without Dave Butters, Ivan Aquino and Kim Jones, while Trojans were only able to field Stella Hooker of their experienced women. The game followed a similar pattern to the league meeting between the two, earlier in the season. For about twenty minutes, Trojans kept within three or four goals of Croydon, and at half time the score was 14-9 in the home team's favour. Steve Jones scored five of Croydon's goals with Alison Rotheram contributing three. In the second half, Croydon extended their lead to 23-11 at one point. Youngster Joseph Furlano was brought on in place of Andy Withers with about ten minutes to go, and Trojans built up some momentum, scoring six goals in quick sucession. Not unlike Croydon's last match in Cambridge, in fact. But this week, Croydon responded by reeling off seven of their own goals, including three Paul Jeanes long shots. Final score was 31-18 to Croydon. The match was probably most notable for featuring the experimental free pass rule, whereby 'major' fouls result in a free throw from the penalty spot, and 'minor' fouls a throw-in from the nearest sideline. Referees have a tough enough job as it is, without the added pressure of distinguishing between what's major and minor. Will all referees be able to do that consistently? The rule would certainly trim the wings of the more combative players, who may find themselves fearful of giving away goals (and that is what a free pass from the penalty spot should be at the top level) if they mis-time interceptions out in the nether regions of the court. This match also demonstrated that being forced to take a minor infringement free throw from the side-line does slow the game down - certainly it did little to improve it a from a spectator's point of view.
