17Feb02: Croydon v Invicta

Invicta came to Royal Russell school looking avoid a slip-up against a Croydon side that in the space of a few weeks last season, cost them the League title and the Cup. Revenge had already been comprehensively exacted once, at Buckmore in the first match of the New Year, and the Kent club dished out more of the same treatment.

Croydon fielded their regular first team side, including Dave Butters who managed only ten minutes in the last match against Bec. Invicta too looked at full strength, with Candice Higgins (chosen ahead of Kim Henderson) the only survivor from Invicta's Senior Division promotion team of two years ago. Several players would have been hoping to catch the eye of the watching assistant national coach, Graham Box.

Invicta started strongly, racing into a 1-5 lead with Dave Buckland sinking three shots. Long shots from Butters and Janine Collier, and an Anna Jeanes drop-off, brought the score back to 4-5. Invicta captain Rob Williams' long shot took the score to 4-6, but Butters scored a running-in shot. At 5-6, Invicta decided that a time-out was necessary, and whatever was said clearly worked, as Invicta scored the next three goals, including a spectacular over-the-head number from Scott Brooker. Penalties from Butters and Steve Jones, both earned themselves, kept Croydon in touch, but Invicta were able to take the score out to 7-12. Butters and Jones, with the first of four free throws, narrowed the gap, but Invicta scored two critical goals just before half time, to go in 9-14 up.

For about ten minutes in the second half, the game continued to be a close affair, but the closest Croydon got to Invicta was four goals behind, at 13-17. Thereafter the game became something of a procession as some excellent shooting from Invicta was punctuated by occasional Croydon goals. Corinne Buckland in particular impressed with six second half goals, to add to her three in the first half. Final score was 18-28 in Invicta's favour.

Invicta were extremely impressive in victory. Two things really differentiate them from most other Premier League teams - the quality of their shooting, and the quality of their passing. They have enough free-scoring players that if one or two have an off-day, others can compensate. And their passing really stood out today, as their hard, accurate passes and quick one-twos contrasted with Croydon's sometimes laboured and inaccurate play. That probably owes much to their players' greater international experience, an arena where slack passing is not forgiven. Croydon will have a lot of work to do if they are to beat Invicta when the two sides meet again in the BKA Cup semi-final.

17Feb02: Croydon 2 v Invicta 2

An effervescent Invicta second team scored a comfortable victory against Croydon 2. With Ryan Dring on vacation, Croydon brought in the much-experienced Mickey Moore for a rare second team appearance. Mark Hickey was the early hero for Invicta scoring four of his sides first seven goals as the Kent club struggled to pull away from Croydon. Half time score was 5-9 to Invicta, which rather flattered Croydon who had struggled to really get going - but must have made them believe that if they only improved moderately, there was a chance of taking something from the match. But instead it was Invicta who picked up play, and were able to double their tally while restricting Croydon to just two second half goals.

17Feb02: Croydon 3 v Bec 3

Croydon entertained Bec in this exciting encounter at Royal Russel. Bec were only able to field 7 players and in the first half Croydon's inexperience showed as they failed to take advantage of their extra man. Goals were traded steadily to bring the score at half time 8-7 to Bec. The Croydon halftime talk proved very effective as they sorted out how to make the most of the extra body. The second half saw 5 unanswered goals as Dave Rotheram and young Daniel Moore scored with ease. Rotheram had played the 4th team prior to this game and coupled with a 13-hour drinking session the day before, his energies began to flag a little. He had the perfect foil in new-comer Neil Paterson however as he covered most of the pitch scoring another goal in the process. Bec battled hard but were ultimately blown away with Croydon's steady scoring in the 2nd half. The hosts ran out 16-9 victors.
