Croydon KC 17 v 19 Mitcham KC Croydon Korfball Club got off to a disappointing start in their National League campaign with a 17-19 home defeat to local rivals Mitcham KC. From a score of 15-15 with some ten minutes remaining, the visitors’ youthful team pulled ahead by two goals and Croydon were not able to overhaul them. Two goals from Ross Bower, and one each from Karen Sparrow and John Perrot proved to be the hammer blows for Mitcham. Mitcham’s involvement in European competition in the British pre-season was apparent in an early sharpness, enabling them to open up a 3-6 lead. Croydon by contrast were slow to start, their shooting standing in contrast to the accuracy of the visitors’, most of whom had played half a dozen more competitive games in the run-up to this match. But with fifteen minutes gone, Croydon stepped up a gear and finished the first half strongly. Four consecutive goals from Ivan Aquino, Alison Rotheram, Dave Butters and Steve Jones made the score at half time 9-8 to Croydon, with Mitcham definitely on the back foot. The half time break appeared to do little to lift Mitcham’s fortunes, as Croydon added a further two goals from Jones and Butters. Mitcham coach Colin Boys made a tactical substitution to bring on former GB international Jane Abbey in place of Ella Wright, and straight away this lifted the visitors. Perrot, Abbey, Peter Teague and Byron Atwell sunk four goals interspersed by a Butters free throw. After pulling the score back to 12-12, Croydon were never again in front. Atwell, Teague and Karen Sparrow scored three goals for Mitcham, but two penalties from Steve Jones and an Aquino running-in shot brought the score to 15-15. Sparrow replied with a running-in shot, followed by a Bower long shot to put Mitcham’s lead to 15-17. Jenny Allen, on as a substitute for Kim Jones, scored a running-in shot of her own, but a Perrot penalty extended the lead to two goals again. Butters earned himself a penalty, which he converted to narrow the deficit to just one goal, but Bower secured the win for Mitcham with a goal from under the post. Croydon will be left to reflect upon their inability to shut down the accurate shooting of the Mitcham attack at the close of the game, when it mattered the most. Teams: Croydon – Steve Jones (6 goals), Dave Butters (4), Ivan Aquino (3), Richard Crabb (1), Alison Rotheram (1), Janine Collier (1), Kim Jones, Katerina van der Buntova, Jenny Allen (sub, 1) Mitcham – John Perrot (5), Peter Teague (4), Ross Bower (3), Byron Atwell (3), Karen Sparrow (2), Ella Wright (1), Carly Holness, Sam Wells, Jane Abbey (sub, 1) Croydon KC2 10 v 22 Mitcham KC2 Mitcham’s young second team started off strongly, buoyed by the performance of their first team shortly before, which took them into a 0-5 lead. After such a slow start, Croydon did improve sufficiently to go into half time 5-11 down, helped by two goals from Anna Jeanes. After the interval, Croydon clung onto the hope of an unlikely recovery – but long shots from Mitcham’s Dean Woods and Jane Abbey put paid to that ten minutes in, as they took the score to 7-15. From then on the game was something of a procession, and finished 10-22 in Mitcham’s favour.
