BKA Cup Round 1 The 2nd team travelled up the M40 to Abingdon, Oxford, for two matches as part of the 1st round of the BKA Cup. The team arrived to see the end of the 1st match between hosts, Abingdon and Kingfisher 1. Kingfisher struggled to make their experience pay but were never really troubled and ended up comfortable victors. Croydon KC2 10 v 11 Kingfisher KC1 Croydon started with an experienced team including 1st team regular, Ivan Aquino, partnering Joe Furlano in attack with Anna Jeanes and Sarah George. Jennie Allen, Julia Johnson, Andy Withers and Nigel Hudspith started in defence Early goals were traded between the sides as Croydon were unable to finish many promising moves with goals. Indeed Kingfisher young side took advantage of the space allowed them in the small court to go into the break with a 2 goal lead. The 2nd half started with a penalty from Anna Jeanes and long shot from Aquino to bring the score level. Croydon then went 2 up but were unable to keep Kingfisher out to build a sizeable lead - as soon as they went 2 ahead they conceded 2 quick goals in return. In the end as time ran out, Kingfisher edged ahead themselves with a well taken running shot which was well received by the small crowd. Croydon then rushed to equalise and with some poor shot selection eventually ran out of time. It is disappointing to note that this Croydon team (in many ways similar to their 1st team) always seem to lose such fifty-fifty games. Next year's opponents will deserve more respect than that given to this young and lively Kingfisher side. Abingdon KC 1 v 16 Croydon KC2 After the previous 2 results in this mini tournament this final leg was a dead rubber with Kingfisher having already qualified. Abingdon took advantage of the court time to test some of their more inexperienced players against re-organised Croydon side. Sadly for Abingdon, Croydon took out all their frustration at the previous result with a near perfect start with 4 goals in as many minutes. The scoring continued unabated for most of the 1st half with Dan Moore registering his first goal at this level, with Aquino also netting a first half hat-trick. Abingdon earned themselves 2 penalties but were unable to register with either. In the 2nd half, Abingdon brought on some more experienced players and began the game with more purpose. However they were unable to stop the scoring with further goals from Andy Withers, Aquino, Jennie Allen and Sarah George. Abingdon's only consolation was a penalty as Croydon powered away with the game.
