Croydon KC1 12 v 13 Nottingham City KC1

Nottingham achieved the most memorable victory in their National League history, with a 12-13 win over Croydon. Richard Buttinger and Alistair Knight each scored three goals, but it was Martin Hubbard's goal in the dying minutes that sealed victory for the visitors. Last week, Croydon showed that they can demolish a team with 20-4 hammering of Bec, but as with the Mitcham encounter in the season's opening game, they came out second best in a close run-in.

As the scoreline suggests, goals were hard to come by throughout the game. Both teams started out with fast-paced attacks, but both defences were equally intense. It took the best part of twenty minutes for the score to reach 3-4. Steve Jones scored two of Croydon's opening three goals and Knight, when he wasn't tripping over his own legs, scored two of Nottingham's four goals. Croydon were becoming increasingly irate with each other and the referee, but had every reason to go into half time reasonably upbeat after an Anna Jeanes long shot and Dave Butters free throw took the score to 5-6.
The second half started off as slowly as the first, it taking ten minutes for Knight to score his third long shot and Ivan Aquino his first for Croydon. Nottingham then went into a 7-10 lead, forcing Croydon coach Ronald van der Bunt to call a time out. Something he said clearly worked, as Croydon scored the next 3 goals - Janine Collier levelling the scores at 10-10. Editha van Leorn and Buttinger took Nottingham two goals ahead, but Jennie Allen pulled one back for Croydon. Croydon's attacking became increasingly frantic, while Nottingham retained a little more composure - no more so than when Hubbard sank his goal in the dying minutes. Andy Withers was brought on as substitute for Aquino, but even though Jones scored a free throw it was too little, too late.

Croydon were without Alison Rotheram and Katerina van der Buntova for the match, while three other players had been struggling with illness in the past week. Not that is an excuse, for Croydon would still have expected to win. The simple truth is that 12 goals is rarely enough to win a Premier League match, even if your defence is working well. Van der Bunt may look to make changes for next week's match against Nomads, and Andy Withers and Paul Jeanes both pressed a case by scoring 19 goals between them in the following second team match.

Nottingham arguably look like being short of goalscoring power against the top teams, but were impressive in defence and were generally well-organised. On the evidence of this performance, they should have enough to avoid relegation. In fact, this is unlikely to be the last shock that they cause this season, particularly when in their home matches when the opposition has to travel for three hours.

Croydon - Dave Butters 3 (1pen, 1 FT), Steve Jones 3 (2FT), Richard Crabb 1, Ivan Aquino 1, Anna Jeanes 1, Kim Jones 1, Janine Collier 1, Jennie Allen 1, Andy Withers (sub)
Nottingham - Alistair Knight 3, Richard Buttinger 3, Martin Hubbard 1, Rob Mann 1, Editha van Leorn 2, Emma Sherritt 2, Esther Terlouw 1, Vicki Kellaway

Croydon KC2 30 v 9 Kwiek KC2

Croydon started off quickly against a young Kwiek team. Paul Jeanes and Andy Withers scored the first four goals between them, setting something of a precedent for the rest of the match. With five minutes gone, Croydon appeared to think that the match was won, and Kwiek were able to bring the score back to 5-3. That was the wake-up call, and further goals and penalties from Jeanes and Withers and middle-distance shooting from Sarah George saw Croydon into half time 15-6 up.

The second half proved painful for the substantial Kwiek support, as Croydon racked up another 15 goals, to Kwiek's 3, with most Croydon players finding the net. Final score was 30-9 to Croydon, and in general, a job well done.

Croydon - Andy Withers 11 (5pen, 1FT), Paul Jeanes 8 (3pen, 1FT), Neil Paterson 1, Nigel Hudspith 1, Sarah George 4, Julia Johnson 2, Lorna Gilbert 2, Amanda Furlano, Daniel Moore (sub, 1pen).
