Croydon KC1 19 v 24 Nomads KC1 Nomads took a huge step towards securing a Europa cup place on Sunday at Royal Russell school with a 5 goal win over a disappointing Croydon team. Croydon were again still without Ali Rotheram but Kat van der Buntova returned to the starting line-up in place of Jennie Allen. Nomads were at full strength after the Summer reshuffles. The game started brightly with neither team able to build more than a 1 goal advantage. Both teams conceded 2 penalties a piece before the Nomads coach called a time-out with the scores level at 7 all. Nomads managed to bridge a 2 goal gap after the time-out after Steve Jones conceded his side's third penalty which Steve Kingsford converted. Goals continued to be traded until Nomads stretched their advantage to 4 goals before a running in shot from the lively Jones brought the score back to 9-12 at half time. Croydon's Summer recruit, Richie Crabb was substituted at half time to be replaced by Andy Withers. The pattern of play continued though as Croydon could not claw back the deficit and with Kerry Sargeant's long shot mid way into the 2nd half, the match looked beyond Croydon with the scores at 13-19. And so it proved as the Nomads continued to score important goals Sarah George was brought on after a knee injury to Kim Jones and despite a late rally from 2 long shots from Dave Butters, Nomads had little trouble in holding on to win 19-24. With three defeats from four and with champions Invicta to come next week, Croydon's European ambitions are looking decidedly in trouble. Croydon will be looking for more goals from around the team as Butters and Jones again carried the team scoring-wise with 14 of the team's 19 goals between them. Croydon switched to rebound defence to force Nomads into conceding possession and the tactic worked as Nomads were rightly called for time-wasting. However time ran out and Croydon were left frustrated as another close one slipped away.
