Croydon 36 v 12 Tottenham Croydon's Jekyll and Hyde season took another twist at Royal Russell on Sunday. On a good day, they're very good, and it was one of those days as they demolished Tottenham 36-12 in their BKA Cup match. Steve Jones and Dave Butters again led the goalscoring with 8 apiece, but encouragingly five other players scored 3 or more goals. In the first half, Croydon raced into a 7-0 lead, and in fact extended that to 12-2 at one point. Steve Jones' recent excellent form continued with three early goals, while Anna Jeanes also scored two. Some sloppy Croydon passing allowed Tottenham to come back into the game towards the end of the half, and the visitors brought the the score back to 14-5. However Ivan Aquino's 3rd and 4th goals and one from Dave Butters took the score to 17-5 at half time. Although the score didn't reflect it, Croydon had been rather manic at times in attack, with one division in particular short on structure and organisation as they attempted to break down the visitors' quasi-rebound defence. Richard Crabb was brought on as a second half substitute for Aquino and quickly made an impact by scoring three and conceding a penalty after knocking Tottenham's Richard Windram flying across the sports hall while trying to intercept a ball. Crabb almost took his revenge a few minutes later by faking a shot under the post, causing Windram to turn his head and move into a non-defending position - only for Crabb to miss the basket. Croydon's attack had become considerably better organised in the second half, and produced some high quality, slick goals. Janine Collier in particular benefited by scoring four long shots, taking advantage of the ample time and space she was afforded. Final score was 36-12 to Croydon. It could have been tempting for Croydon to relax after going into half time 17-5 up, but this was a professional performance and the home team kept up a vigorous tempo throughout the match. Croydon had been forced to call up both Julia Hook and Sarah George from the second team, and another second team player, Lorna Elliott, came on as a late substitute for Anna Jeanes. Yet this did not impede Croydon's play at all, and Sarah George stood out with three goals and some aggressive defending. Croydon will be looking to take this form into next week's match against North Downs, but will be aware that the last time they did a demolition job, on Bec in the second game of the season, it was followed by a surprise defeat to Nottingham. Despite suffering from shell-shock at times, Tottenham contributed to an entertaining match with some well-taken distance shooting and a creditably positive attitude. But lacking a sideline coach, their normally well-organised defence appeared all at sea, and applied little pressure to the Croydon shooters. Concentration seemed to be a problem at times as well - Croydon's Butters and Jones seemed able to exchange 40 metre passes from defence to attack at will, with the receiving player able to put up a shot from close to the basket. The fact that several players were late arriving at the venue also did their cause no good. Croydon - Steve Jones 8 goals (2 pen), Dave Butters 8 (1 pen), Ivan Aquino 4, Andy Withers 1, Richard Crabb (sub, 3), Janine Collier 5, Anna Jeanes 3, Sarah George 3, Julia Hook 1, Lorna Elliott (sub) Match Report by Andy Final Score: Croydon 1 36 vs 12 Tottenham 1There were no Croydon scorers in this game.Submitted by on 23 Oct 05
