Croydon 2 storm into 2nd round of the BKA Cup

Croydon 2 produced two solid performances to beat Cambridge City and Woking in the first round of the BKA Cup. Croydon played in the spirit of the competition by passing up the opportunity to field 1st team players, sticking with a new-look 2nd team comprising Paul Jeanes, Dan Moore, Mandy Furlano and Lorna Elliot starting in attack and Anna Jeanes, Tammy Kentfield, Andy Withers and Nick Collier starting in defence. National League side, Cambridge City looked to be fielding a near 1st team line-up, whilst the final member of the round-robin style competition, Woking, also looked to have brought their best side to Royal Russell School, Croydon. Each match was 40 minutes in duration.

Croydon against Cambridge was the opening match and the first half was a tight affair with teams trading goals - Cambridge were working on their girls as much as possible whilst Croydon were concentrating on long shooting from the Jeanes family and Elliot. With the game delicately poised at 3-all in the 2nd half, Withers scored a brace of long shots to put the home side ahead. Despite a long shot from Cambridge this lead was further cemented by a drop off from Elliot and another long shot from Anna Jeanes. This low scoring game petered out 8-5 to Croydon.

In the next game between Cambridge and Woking, Cambridge relaxed into an easy victory that never looked in doubt, a fact made conclusively by a somewhat unusual free-throw goal that started with a Cambridge boy feeding his female colleague with a pass between his legs!

In the final rubber, Croydon needed to defeat Woking to avoid a mathematical decision to decide the 2nd round qualifiers. Woking started in bullish form with two deep long shots in the first few minutes. A penalty won by Collier and scored by Withers, followed by a running-in shot from the ferret-like Collier quickly restored the balance however. Croydon continued this goal-scoring streak to net 7 unanswered goals with scores from Paul Jeanes, Moore and the ever-lively Collier. A shell-shocked Woking restored some pride with some well-taken running-in shots. In the 2nd half Moore was replaced by Dan Pratt and Furlano by Sarah George for Croydon. George was on the sheet immediately with a long shot before an injury to Paul Jeanes meant he was replaced by an eager Steve Jones. Croydon reverted to rebound defence in the 2nd half and this proved very successful as the ball was swiftly returned up field after each of Woking's one-shot attacks. Woking did enjoy a late flurry with a couple of opportunist goals but by this time the game was not in doubt and Croydon ran out 12-8 victors.
