Invicta win gracelessly

Last season Invicta turned up in this fixture and got their bottom smacked as Croydon pulled off the shock of the season to defeat the Champions. Despite fielding a similar team, history was not to be repeated.

Croydon did start the better though with a drop-off from Ross Carr-Taylor opening the scoring but Invicta were soon on the 'sheet themselves and were playing the more fluent korfball. Croydon hung in though as they earned themselves a series of penalties in the first half converted by Dave Butters and Paul Jeanes. James MacDonald showed his worst side again as he appealed for everything and man-handled the Croydon players to the ground but it was fellow miscreant, Rob Williams, who was scoring the goals as he netted 4 in the first half to leave the score 6-9 at the break.

Croydon needed to score first to keep themselves in it but they were unable to keep Invicta out as Williams scored again and Sarah-Jane Hubbard also found the net. Andy Withers, Sarah George and Anneka Barretto were replaced by Nigel Hudspith, Marika Barretto and debutante Grace Stimpson to add some shooting power to the Croydon side but none were able to make telling differences as the visitors never looked like being over-hauled, despite a late flurry prompted by Saskia de Jager and a further penalty from Butters.

Croydon will be pleased with the fight they showed in this match and will be looking to translate this form into subsequent matches. For Invicta, it is difficult to see what they will gain from this match bar the 2 points and revenge from the loss last season.

Croydon 2 comfortable against Invicta 2

Croydon 2 put Invicta 2 to the sword in this Reserve League fixture. The hosts were clearly the stronger and despite a 2nd half wobble the result never looked in doubt after a strong captain's performance from Nigel Hudspith ably assisted with the Croydon girls running rings round their opponents. Indeed everyone found the net with Grace Stimpson and Gary Heath leading the scoring with 3 goals each.

Croydon 2 will be looking to carry this form forward after a lot of close scrapes in the first half of the season.

Croydon 3 lose out to Woking 1

So the thirds had Woking and I was really hoping that we would win. The team was set up I even went as far as checking sections with brain heads so as to have a smooth balance of skills on the pitch. In attack was Patrick, Mick, Becky and Jane and defence Alex (Super Coach), Vernon (The Heavy), Chrissie and me.

Down to the details, one team scored first and as the goals went in the score stayed close after that. Mick I remember scored his usual long shot that you think how does he do it? and I thought yes its a Woking pay back! Our section got a penalty, I didn't even think Alex might want to take it cos I was so oh I want to win. I have to say that I did score it but this game I actually let goals in! Woking managed to pull ahead on the goals and it looked like we were doomed but with true spirit we battled. Jane was taking shots left, right and centre which did pay off, Becky was pushed left, right and centre so you know she had to score! Pat was too full of interceptions to score (and the guilt of how many calls I made to track him down) and Mick added another goal to make his total score 2.

Our section ran around, in a constructive manner too, or so I thought, maybe I should check with Alex? Vernon was as expected and was flying around (there was no need for oxygen). Mind you he didn't seem pleased when I said right work on Vernon for the running in shot at the end (he had scored 2 so I was sure he could up that some more)! Alex was in the mix and hopefully enjoyed his first (and not last) game for us. Me and Chrissie ran and assisted and like the rest of the team got stuck in!

In the second half Phil came on for Alex who needed to concentrate on the firsts [and was frankly knackered - Ed.]. Glory, he scored a running in shot and a 5m shot (Alex you must have tired the Woking player out!) all cool stuff but not enough. We had the spirit, motivation, effort and they had one handed shots, penalties and even though they won they didn't seem happy so hey that's cool. Thank you all for playing I hope you enjoyed yourselves and for those of you who saw I hoped you liked what you saw (other than the score). Lorna XX

Croydon 4 see of West London 2

A welcome to the latest parent-child partnership with John and Becky Dean turning out for the fourths against West London.

Croydon got off to a dream start with Becky Dean scoring a brace for the first time. 2-0 was soon 2-1 until a Phil Aish penalty restored the 2 goal lead. West London responded with 2 straight goals to finish the half 3-3.

After the restart Steve Pratt netted his first goal for the 4ths this season but five minutes from time West London levelled. After so much hard work all game, a draw would have disappointed the home crowd but a final frantic push resulted in another penalty award to Croydon, and the ever cool Aish popped in his second of the day. Thankfully, 30 seconds after the restart the final whistle sounded. Close but oh so deserved. Just a special little mention to John Dean who did superbly on his first outing, and knew he'd been in game - hope a long hot bath eased those muscles out!
