Croydon push Mitcham in the Cup

Croydon took on favourites Mitcham in the BKA Cup with nothing to lose. Croydon featured Nigel Hudspith in for Paul Jeanes but were otherwise unchanged while the visitors were missing a couple of their big names but were otherwise at full strength.

Croydon started their attack with some patient passing but it was Mitcham who made the perfect start with Steve Green scoring from distance with their first shot. However the hosts were soon back into it as Ross Carr Taylor and Dave Butters scored from distance. Mitcham replied with Byron Atwell but the visitors were never able to assert control as Croydon kept taking their chances and the pattern of the teams trading goals continued throughout the first half. Mitcham finally restored their lead with the last goal of the half as Sam Wells scored a running in shot. Half time score: 6-7 and all to play for.

Croydon expected a backlash in the 2nd half and to some extent Mitcham provided this as, apart from a penalty from Butters, the visitors scored 5 goals on the bounce. Carr Taylor netted from distance and soon after Croydon's attacking section resorted to rebound defence to give Mitcham something to think about. This approach again paid dividends, slowing and frustrating the Mitcham attack but Croydon weren't able to find the net themselves and their only other goal was the 2nd of 2 penalties won by Andy Withers, converted by Dave Butters. Final score: 9-15.
