Croydon 3 vs Nomads 3

The thirds had to play Nomads and it was a late start of 7pm! Starting in attack was Mick Moore (all fresh from holiday), Joe Furlano (do we know that name), Mandy Furlano (ha yes thats the same name) and Leah Palfreyman (ah squad girl). Leaving lucky, or unlucky defence as Andy Burnham (hat trick last week), Peter Lindsey (needs to register), Becky Dean (oh yes we got her back) and Lorna Elliott (shame about that)

This week I can write with confidence that we didn't score first as I let the first goal in! a lovely little collection and shot, that Carol from Nomads was always sneeky! we must have let the next 4 in as well, but we were putting shots up, they just didn't go in! maybe we need some plastic baskets at training - anything to help! half time score was 6 to them and 1 to us and that was a penalty...

So half time talk needed to be good so we didn't drop our heads and continue with letting in goals and not scoring. Nothing major or minor from me, Andy and Peter offered advice to other section and we all agreed that we were playing equally just not scoring (which of course is what the game is all about....)

Fantastic, another penalty! and then a long shot from Mick to prove we could score in open play. The game was moving and everyone seemed to be running and trying like it was the last minutes. Mick and Joe did super hero acrobatics to stop balls coming out of attack. Leah followed on from Mandy's command to do that again with 2 running in shots, and both were with a bloke standing to block her shot. Our section saw Pete get on the score board and Becky kept Mary Allen busy.

Final score 10 - 7 to them so we got better and won the second half!

Croydon 4 vs Pelham 1

Croydon 4 lined up for the first match of the season, with some old, new and experienced faces. Steve Palfreyman, Jon Dean, Becy Pratt and Sarah Withers lined up in attack, with Phil Aish, Simon Mills, Zoe Shewell and Anna Jeanes in defence. Pelhma had to star the game a girl down, with one of their players stuck on the M23 which meant Mrs Jeanes taking the non-shooting role.

It took a while for both teams to settle into the new baskets, with the first ten minutes being a low scoring affair. At 1 goal a piece, Croydon started to make their superior numbers pay and slowly but surely began to take the lead. Half time score 6-2

Pelham were restored to their full compliment of players after the break, which seemed to almost unsettle the Croydon division. No sooner had they got used to attacking against three, they were back up to four and struggled to make chances for each other. Good defending down the other end, eventually paid dividends and Croyond pulled away further.

A back injury to Mike Coen meant that Pelham were again down to 7, but this seemed to inspire Pelham to get a few late goals. Full time score 12-5.

Special mention should go to Zoe Shewell who scored two on her Croydon debut, and also Steve Palfreyman who also scored two after having a break for several years. On this outing Croydon 4 should have a good season ahead of them.
