Croydon 1 trounced by Kwiek 1 at home
After the win against Nottingham last time out, Croydon were looking to continue their run against Kwiek. Coach Butters made one change though: recalling himself in place of Ed Chaney. Kwiek were without naughty boy Steve Green but otherwise looked to have a full side out.
Kwiek raced out of the traps with a penalty against Butters and a goal against Ellis followed by a great pass for a third and then a fourth. At this point they were shooting over 75% and looked quite an outfit for their young age. Despite some kids on the pitch and the label sticking out of his shorts, referee Bond spotted an infringement and Pratt converted the penalty to kick-start the game for the hosts. Croydon's passing was poor in attack meaning they quickly turned the ball over and so the Croydon goal was only a brief pause though for the visitors as they continued to shoot beautifully from middle distance and build up a commanding lead. A time-out to Croydon did little to stem the flow and at the half time whistle the score was 1-13.
Croydon got an earful at half time and it seemed to help but Kwiek were still able to find a couple of delicious drop-offs early in the 2nd half. Pratt again converted from the spot and Croydon were unfortunate with some of their shots at times but Kwiek continued to dominate at 2-18. With 10 minutes remaining, Croydon rang the changes with Butters replacing himself for Chaney and Andy Withers came on for Zak Omar. Francis took advantage of Chaney's inexperience though to score 2 more before Jane Belfourd beat her player to score a tidy running in shot. Kwiek continued to trouble the scorers though. Croydon put on a late spurt as Lorna Elliott scored a runner, Belfourd converted from distance and Ellis scored a nasty-looking-one-handed turn-in-the-feed-hoik but by then the game was long gone.
The scoreline doesn't lie: Croydon were soundly beaten, the match was over before 15 minutes had been played. They need to start faster all over the pitch and put away the simple chances if they have any hope of moving off the bottom this season. For their part, Kwiek looked very sharp and although their shooting tailed off towards the end, it was still mightily impressive.
