Croydon 1 fall to Trojans 2 in season openerCroydon 1 started the new LKA Premier season against Trojans 2 at Trinity School. They lined up with Dave Butters, Zak Omar, Hannah Hale, and Sarah Withers in defence, Anna Jeanes (c), Vernon Ellis, Grace Stimpson and Andy Withers in attack. Trojans started a girl down but they still got the ball rolling first with a goal from their first attack, however Croydon were soon level after a long shot from Jeanes. Trojans again pulled ahead but Ellis spun his man and scored one from under the post. The 1st half continued in a similar vein with goals being traded, some penalties after some interesting calls from the official. As the half petered out Croydon seemed to lose some steam and Trojans stretched to a half time lead of 10-7. Croydon fought well, with Omar in particular not getting the rewards for some good defending, and at times recycled the ball well for some sustained, multi-shot attacks but too often they were found wanting: missing simple chances to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Sarah Withers and Jeanes scored a couple from distance to keep Croydon in the game but Croydon never regained parity. As the half wore on, Trojans brought on a couple of subs and with five minutes remaining Croydon's Stimpson was replaced by Karen James. Trojans scored the last goal of the game with seconds remaining to leave the scores 15-10. For Croydon there were some encouraging signs but they'll feel Trojans were really there for the taking and rue the missed chances versus their opponents' clinical finishing.
