Croydon 2 hold Highbury 1 to a chilly draw

Croydon 2 went to Score, which was like playing korfball in a fridge, for most and a freezer for Ben and Hannah who had arrived back from Adelaide on Friday. Croydon started with an attack of Ben, Ed, Hannah, Karen, and defence Pete, Adam, Jane, Zoë. The game started slowly with Highbury taking 1st blood with a running in goal after 5 minutes. Croydon equalised with a well worked drop shot from Ben. Croydon conceded a long shot which Pete matched with a good middle distance effort. Highbury then scored 3 unanswered goals with Jane stopping the rot with a well taken drop shot from a training ground turn pass from Pete, ending the half 5–3.

The 2nd half started with a Ben drop off. Highbury quickly scored a long shot 6-4. Pete found his long shot, scoring 2 Megatron-style goals in quick succession to level the score at 6-6. Ed made it 6-7 with another long shot and 18 minutes on the clock. Highbury then caught the 4th team illness and missed a penalty but made up with a long shot. Jane then decided she was cold and went for a running in shot to score making it 7-8 with 11 to go. Highbury’s captain was next up with a penalty and the 4th team got him as the ball bounced out. They did get back on terms with a long shot to level the score 8 each. 5 Minutes of edgy korfball followed with both teams missing good chances.

A good point earned for the 2nd team.

Croydon 3 unable to beat Supernova 1

Croydon 3 travelled to Supernova to play what everyone knew was going to be a tough game. Starting in attack for his first 3rd team game was Luke James along side Gary Heath, Becki Pratt and Steph Robinson. Leaving Phil Aish, Mark Irving, Grace Stimpson and Sarah Hole in defence.

Right now I’m not too sure who scored first. (That would be Supernova Karen) but I do know that Gary scored a great goal with his first touch of the ball! See Gary I said I’d put it in! After that Supernova took charge of the game. Croydon not being able to put passes together and added to the mix the team not knowing how each other played it was always going to be a hard game to win.

Between the goals from Supernova, Gary scored a great goal from the corner of the pitch near the half way line, Grace put one away from way down-town, Luke, not to miss out, copied Grace and put away a neat long shot to his defenders surprise and Phil scored a running in goal with a great feed from Grace. At half time the score was 9-6, but Supernova were well drilled and Croydon just couldn’t push on to close the gap.

Despite having little joy in front of the korf in the second half the team defended strongly with Phil putting in some fine finger tip blocks to break Nova's passing moves. Mark was able to convert a penalty that bounced around a little before going in, which put a smile on his face that was missing all game.

Nova's were certainly a physical side, with Sarah taking a hit to the face early doors and Steph not wanting to be left out, also took an elbow or some other body part to the nose and had to come off for a few minutes. But she came back on and kept battling with her defender. Just to show that Croydon could give it out as well, Gary (accidentally?) slapped his player in the face when going for a lose ball.

As the final whistle went Croydon looked happy for the game to be over, 19–8 to Supernova. Well done to everyone that played and let's look to push on for the next game.
