Bec 3 put to the sword by Croydon 1Croydon 1 travelled to an unfamiliar and wrongly postcoded Ernest Bevan College for a game against Bec 3. With Dan Pratt held up in traffic, they started with Grace Stimpson, Lorna Elliott, Zak Omar and Ben Hale in attack, whilst in defence were Anna Jeanes, Hannah Hale, a slightly under-the-weather Vernon Ellis and, captain for the day, Andy Withers. Croydon wanted to start well and this they did with a training ground move for a drop-off to Omar but Catherine Weller equalised for Bec from distance startight after. Bec 3 were awarded the first of many free-passes but Omar was all over Liam Clarke as he introduced him to his close friend, Mr Blam. Ellis scored a runner but Annie Rheason and then Kitman Wong scored to take Bec 3 into an unexpected lead after 8 minutes. Withers brought Pratt on for the unfortunate Hale and Pratt was soon on the scoresheet converting a penalty. Hannah Hale then found the basket with an unorthodox short shot on the run from the back of the basket but again Croydon were pegged back as Clarke scored his penalty chance. With 8 minutes of the half remaining though, Croydon turned on the gas and scored the next 4 goals: 2 from Pratt, a free-pass from Jeanes and then a perfect long shot from Ellis. Half-time: 4-8. Bec 3 were not done yet though and brought themselves straight back into the match with goals from Weller, Wong and Clarke. Jeanes scored a second free-pass though and Elliott scored from the back of the basket to steady the ship: 7-10. Despite a goal from Bec, Jeanes scored a peach from distance and Withers did likewise after finding himself wide open from 6 metres. Stimpson then showed off another training ground move off the back of the post and with a goal from Omar, Croydon had quickly put the game to bed at 9-14. Croydon called a time-out to give their defence a bit of a breather, and from the restart Hale made a strong dart for the post and was fouled, Withers stepped up to convert the resulting penalty. There was still time for Stimpson hoik one in and for Jeanes to concede a dodgy penalty but by then the game was over. Final score: 10-16. Despite Croydon having a slightly disrupted warm-up to the game, they will be disappointed to concede 10 goals to Bec 3 but, to the hosts' credit, they scored some good goals and put their South London rivals under pressure in the first half but Croydon's superior shooting and experience in defence was the difference. The match saw a slightly different Croydon line up, with Andy Burnham away house hunting for the weekend. Paul Jeanes returned to the side after weeks away reffing on the International stage, and he teamed up with Steve Chadd, Steph Robinson and Susan Baker. The other end saw newcomer Andy Forey start with Mark Irving, Lynday Barker and Kathy Dean. The first 20 minutes of the match saw both teams' defences rule the day. Clearly they were waiting for some important spectators to turn up before the attacks got going!! It was Woking who finally broke the deadlock, but spritely young Irving immediately evened up the scores. Woking tried again, going ahead, only for Chadd to even up again. His goal was an absolute peach, Jeanes took the ball for the restart after Woking's goal, passed straight to Chadd who was in acres of space, and he slotted the ball home. Woking thought they'd give themselves a 2 goal lead this time, but Robinson wasn't having any of it. She loitered in the corner of the attack zone as the ball sailed over to her, and in it went, with the crowd going wild. Not content with just the one goal, she did exactly the same thing again; loitered with intent in the corner, caught the ball, shot, and scored. Again the crowd could hardly contain themselves. With the score at 4-4, Croydon's defence let in another couple of goals, but this time, the Croydon side could only pull back one (through a Jeanes' drop off) before the visitors scored another 2. Croydon had played well for the first 40 minutes or so, but Woking showed why they are top of the table with some excellent shooting and attacking skills.
