Croydon 2 knock the wind out of Woking 1

High flying Croydon 2 took on Woking 1 at Addlestone Leisure Centre in the LKA League. The Nomads referee failed to show up so with Woking continuing their tight fisted policy of booking the hall for 2 hours for 2 50 minute games, the game started late and wouldn't go the full distance. By the end, perhaps this suited the hosts as a damage limitation policy.

Croydon started well with Andy Withers scoring under the basket after a pass from Kim Jones and he followed this up with a penalty after a he was fouled whilst shooting. Down the other end Mark Irving was creating space and scored two peaches from middle distance to leave the hosts reeling. They got back into with a goal but Karen James was on target and at the break Croydon were 6-1 up.

Luke James came on for Irving in the 2nd half and frankly this disrupted the section as he proceeded to shoot every time the ball fell into his hands! Meanwhile the patient Joost Zierikzee got on the score-sheet and K James continued to net the easy chances she was presented with. With Jones working tirelessly Withers scored a couple more and after many attempts both L James and Ed Chaney finally found the back of the basket. Woking scored within seconds of the final whistle but when time ran out Croydon were still comfortably ahead, 5-14.

Croydon 4 win league title at Woking!

Croydon 4 started a crunch game against Woking 2 with a commanding, but mathematically unsafe, lead at the top of LKA League 4. They finished with the league title in the bag and a come-back win against wily Woking 2.

Woking 2 had a chance of the title but Croydon were in determined mood before the match. The visitors started with new comers Suzie Davis, Javier Plaza and veterans Jon Dean (c) and Sarah Withers in attack with a defence of Dom Leppard, Martin James, Sarah Hole and Rhiannon Williams-Clarke.

The first half didn't go exactly as planned as Croydon struggled to find their passes or attack effectively. Given time and space, Woking 2 would create chances and after 15 minutes they had mustered a 3 goal lead before sank a couple before James got Croydon on the board. At half-time Croydon needed to get themselves together or their season-long unbeaten run would be history.

The talismanic, well manic at least, Steve Pratt came on for Leppard at half time and this seemed to galvanise the team. Suddenly Withers had the ball in space and scored 2 easy goals (one of which afforded her a weird stroke from the referee) and James was mopping up all over the place and putting back a few of his rebounds for goals. Croydon conceded a couple more but when Pratt scored from a spin in middle distance the game was up for the hosts. It was left to improving Plaza to put the icing on the cake as the away crowd went wild.

Final score and a thoroughly well-deserved win and title for Croydon 4 with a game left to play. 24 players have been used this season so they have done to be unbeaten with some many people chopping and changing, let's hope they can keep it together with a victory parade against Nomads 6 in a fortnight!
