A mix and match Croydon 2 take on regimental Highbury 1ok this can all change as my memory is not very good these days, was it ever good? dont answer! Joining me in first attack was Mr and Mrs Jones, yes that means we started a player short!! not good. leaving defense as Simon Mills, Ed Chaney, Sue Beresford (or is it Baker) and Sarah Holt. Highbury had the full side and a full side on the bench I think. The game started well with no goals for a while as both teams were passing and missing but then highbury scored twice. Time to see what the newly put together section of four could do, eek I cant remember... I'll just jump into the game in general. Sue had the hard girl who was looking for ex ckc Ben who Simon was marking and didnt he do well. Ed and Sarah worked hard but think the S's had their work cut out. Simon was putting up long shots and they were sooo near, he did score two in the end but all thoses chances! The second half that section was playing better and seemed more organised and were given good instructions and ideas from coach Jones on play. Our section thankfully was joined by Luke James and didnt he do well, 8 goals, he was on long shot fire and obviously we had to work on him and rest our legs. Kim worked hard for running in shots and generally keeping the ball moving, she will be left in bruises from her pushy girl, I did smack a highbury bum for elbowing me when it was unnecessary and Steve did post and plays and organised. My favourite bit was Luke winning a penalty Highbury called a time out, der, so back on the pitch Steve made Kim and I stand either side of him at the centre line in confidence of Luke scoring. First Jon eluded his opponent to score aanother mid range shot and then Mark I got one from distance before Jon scooped in sort of running in shot (which looked suspiciously like travelling). Dom then was fouled as he shot and scored but the ref blew before the ball was in the basket-thankfully he converted the penalty. So we won the last quarter of the game quite convincingly! The slow start can be pardoned this time because several of the team had not played for the thirds for some time and some had not even played a game since January this year, but it was agood all round performance and a different result is likely later in the season. The coaches view: Croydon 3 took the field against a highly experienced Highbury outfit with Dom B., Mark I., Kathy D. and Steph R. in first attack; while Jon D., Mark W., Susie D. and Vicky G. made up the first defence. Croydon started brightly yet lost 2 goals to long range efforts. Switching roles, Jon’s section continued to work well moving into attack and this was rewarded by a composed 3m goal by J. Dean to open Croydon’s scoring (2-1). The attack was now dominating and looked likely to equalise. Mark Wright was unlucky to find his path blocked by one of the more experienced Highbury girls with their reverse movement into his running in shot. With pressure from the Croydon attack; Jon, Mark W. and Susie all went close to scoring; it seemed only a matter of time before they would find the basket. Mark Wright duly obliged with a fine running in shot, but it was judged to be defended. It was therefore particularly cruel when yet another long shot found the basket (3-1) and with Highbury regaining their confidence this was followed up by a smart mid range effort (4-1). Highbury then scored a running in shot, which appeared to be comfortably defended at the post, yet somehow it counted and Croydon found them selves going into half time 5-1 down. Croydon had so far given a decent performance but had suffered from some excellent Highbury shooting from distance as well as being on the wrong end of the referees whistle; calmness, patience and persistence being emphasised for the second half. Calmness was definitely needed as the game resumed and Susie was harshly penalised for a defended shot. The ball was immediately sent to the other end of the pitch and Highbury sunk another long shot (6-1). Patience was definitely required as Highbury continued their scoring with yet another long effort and then an over the top fed runner as Susie’s marker cut her out of the equation (8-1). The score line suggested at this point that Croydon had been thoroughly outplayed, but nothing could be further from the truth. Through their persistence, Croydon then found their shooting boots (or should that be hands in Korfball?) Mark Irvine scored himself a peach of a long shot, one that Highbury’s girls would have been proud of (8-2). Then a controversial decision left even Highbury somewhat bemused; Mark Wright (again) sprinted onto a running in shot, had the ball knocked out of his hands, onto his foot. The referee awarded a restart to Highbury for football. Not to be perturbed by this, Croydon continued to push for another and were rewarded when Jon Dean scored his second of the day with a cool running in shot (8-3). It was Dean again who then wrapped up his hat trick. Having started a running in movement, he stopped sharply and confidently scored from short range instead (8-4). The comeback was well and truly underway and the score line was at last starting to reflect the team’s efforts. Unfortunately Highbury stemmed the flow of Croydon goals; with another long shot (9-4). The goal seemed to cost Croydon their momentum and it wasn’t until the final few minutes that the referee spotted a foul on Mark I.’s running in shot. Dom Bradford stepped up and converted, as the ball didn’t even touch the sides (9-5). There was just enough time for Highbury to respond and they sneaked a runner just before the full time whistle. Final score 10-5. This was a good performance from the thirds, with few of these players having ever played together, or competitively, since last season. At the end of the day it was the quality long range shooting of the Highbury girls that just saw them through in a lively encounter in which Croydon could have felt that lady luck had been against them. Starting in attack for their first ever korfball match were Bryan Burr and David Hughes, and the solitary girl Zoe Shewell. In defence were Martin James, Tracey Gooch, Stephen Gooch, and brand new player Beverley. Bromley started off brightly, moving the ball well between their mix of Junior and Senior players. Their efforts paid off as they quickly found their range and started scoring goals. In attack the section struggled to find the basket with their shots, and the extra Bromley player in collect meant the section could mostly only produce one shot attacks. But CKC4 continued to put in huge amounts of effort, putting up their shots and making some good interceptions. James in particular worked well around the court making a nuisance of himself and collecting any loose balls, despite his opponent having the greater height advantage. But some risky passes between the sections meant Bromley were usually quick to regain possession. Burr finally found the basket for CKC’s first goal with a nice long shot. Bromley continued their dominance and went in to half time with a healthy lead. For the second half Michael Gooch subbed on for Stephen Gooch. Bromley continued to dominate in attack, using their extra girl to set up repeated feeds for running in shots. Hughes grabbed CKC’s second goal with a cheeky shot under the post, having gathered the collect from a previous long shot. Bromley continued to find the basket though, and ran out the game with a few more running shots. Final score 15 - 2. Well played Bryan Burr and David Hughes, who were thrown in the deep end with their first ever match in an undermanned section.
