The first half seemed to rush by in a dizzying blur and Croydon struggled. A flurry of penalties early on saw both sides miss an opportunity each to go ahead. Jon Dean at this point raised the issue that the dark blue/black of the teams was causing problems and the referee agreed that Croydon should don a set of bibs - curious considering this annoyance normally falls to the away team. Unfortunately being able to identify their opposing players didn't seem to help the Croydon defence who were now leaking free passes left, right and centre. Finally the referee gave another penalty, clearly fed up with the persistent Croydon fouling. This time Trojans converted and 10 minutes in the game finally had a goal. While the defence was coming to terms with defending without making contact the attack was working well, youngster Adam Dack was causing the experienced Gary Brooks some difficulty and was extremely unlucky to miss after leaving his opponent in his tracks. By this point Croydon were starting to organise in defence and were now restricting Trojans to long range efforts. However they soon adapted and scored their second with a smart mid range effort. Growing in confidence the away side then scored a flurry of goals scoring a runner and then another mid range made the score 0-4. Croydon were not having a good time of it and this wasn't helped at all when first Steph and then David seemed to defend their players well, yet the referee failing to spot either shot as defended instead chose to punish the latter for an infringement no one else seemed to have seen. Trojans converted to take the score into half time at 0-5. Each section needed to keep their heads, cut out the fouls and play their own game in order to get back on track. At half time Ben Obee replaced fellow youngster Adam Dack who had a terrific half. Despite a sense of optimism going into the second half, Trojans scored from range immediately after the restart to make it 0-6. The game seemed to go into a funk for a while with little happening as Croydon desperately tried to settle but again it was their opponents that found the basket next as Charlotte lost track of her marker to allow a running in effort. 0-7 and Croydon could have perhaps been forgiven at this point for giving up hope, however they were given some much needed inspiration by the energetic David Hughes as he stormed past his player and finally scored a runner for Croydon's first goal of the game. The goal seemed to galvanise the team and just seconds later Zoe went inches within scoring again with another great runner. Croydon had finally got to grip with the Trojans attacks and their opponents seemed to be losing steam as they gave up trying the runners. Charlotte made amends for her earlier defensive lap when she neatly collected the rebound from Ben Obee's long shot and tucked one away under the post. Trojans then responded in similar fashion to take the score to 2-8. Both teams now looked exhausted but kept soldiering on, Charlotte Feakins in particular working the collect brilliantly at each end. While Ben Obee carried on the good work started by Adam in running Brooks over the court and Zoe Shewell kept her attacker quiet while in defence. In the final 5 minutes there was a surge of goals as both teams looked to increase their respective tallies. David Hughes showed a natural instinct for the ways of Korf just a few weeks after joining after he scored a brilliant shot on the move/turn. Trojans interrupted Croydon's flow of goals with two of their own taking the score line to 3-10 before Bryan copied Charlottes earlier under the post rebound shot to make the score a more respectable 4-10. A poor first half from Croydon left them with it all to do at half time down by 6 goals. A much improved second half saw a far more even contest with Croydon actually drawing the half 4-4. Considering the wealth of experience they were up against the team did well and really grew into the game given that the team included 3 newbies and 2 youngsters! I look forward to seeing how they will improve over the rest of the season!
