Croydon 1 overpowered by in-form Trojans 1Croydon 1 travelled to local rivals Trojans for Sundays EKL game. Trojans came into the game in fine form, unbeaten in the league and putting 28 past 4th placed Kingfisher last week. Croydon were looking to move on from a poor showing against Norwich and find some momentum for the remainder of the season. Croydon were unchanged, and started the quickest with a long shot from Ellis. Trojans responded shortly afterwards to make it 1-1. Croydon looked a little more fluent in their build up compared to last week, but strong Trojans pressure in defense meant the final shot often missed the target. A turn and score form Jones and a buzzer beater from Hudspith were the highlights for Croydon. At the other end Trojans made steady progress, thanks largely to a long range shooting exhibition from Holness. The sides came to half time with Trojans 16-5 to the good. More of the same was in store in the 2nd half. Croydon looked to upset Trojans rhythm with some aggressive rebounding with some success. However, S. Brooks and Holness continued to make the most of any space they were afforded and the game ended 32-9. It was another 10 minutes before another goal was scored, and it was again a Croydon one (Wright - penalty). The Croydon defence kept intercepting the ball and feeding it back to their attack, but the Trojans defence then kept up the pressure and Croydon were finding it tough to get into space to shoot. At the change of ends, Trojans scored quickly, before the sections settled again, and Mills then scored for the visiting team. 3-1 to Croydon. Unfortuately Mills then turned his ankle badly, and was totally unable to continue. He was carried from the field of play, and checked over by the extremely competent and helpful Trojans player Sarah-Jane. In his absence, Steve Jones came to the rescue and took to the pitch whilst the team awaited the arrival of Dom Bradford, who raced over when he received the call. Croydon conceded two goals at the restart, but then regained composure and scored the next two (Jones and Wright). As half time approached, Trojans scored again, to end the half 5-5. The second half started with goals being traded by both teams. The scoring rate increased and after 10 minutes it was 9 all (Jones, Champion 2, Lindsey). Another slow patch followed, with only 2 goals being scored by each team in 10 minutes (11-11). Bradford had arrived by this point, and he replaced Jones who was off to ref in Kent. Both defences seem to be tiring, and it was the attacking players who were now starting to dominate. Trojans went ahead by two goals, but Croydon weren't giving up, and clawed one back (Johnson), only to see Trojans score another. Driver scored to bring Croydon to within one goal, but in the dying seconds they couldn't grasp that last goal, and the match ended 14-13 to Trojans.Match Report by Anna Final Score: Trojans 2 14 vs 13 Croydon 2A Champion (2)P Lindsey (2)E Chaney (0)S Jones (2)S Mills (1)D Bradford (0)S Wright (3)H Robinson (2)J Johnson (1)S Baker (0)Submitted by Anna on 04 Mar 12Croydon 4 play friendly with Trojans 3/2Croydon 4 turned up at Trinity to play top of the table Trojans 3. The Croydon players watched the end of the Croydon 1 v Trojans 1 match, and then started their own warm up. They were raring to go, and eager to show what they could do. As the teams were about to begin it became apparent that the Trojans 3 team wasn't quite the normal team though! With only 2 of the 8 Trojans players NOT having already played, they conceded the match and played a friendly. Croydon 4 worked hard against their vastly more experienced opponents. Brian was so enthusiastic he played a kind of total korfball-at one point he collected the ball at least a metre outside his half, passed it through and ran on after several more passes to complete a goal from about 4m, arguably the best move of the game. But everyone played well They can take pride in the way they played, scoring 6 goals against Trojans, and battled to the end. They are looking forward to some real opposition next week!
