CKC2 triumph with brains in the small spaceHaving watched another strong performance from the 3rd team, the second team lined up in a chilly and slippy hall to face supernova 2. The main thing to say about the opposition is that they are extremely tall and enjoy running -both of those features were to play a key role in the hour's play. Coach Zu had this all figured out beforehand and had a plan which everybody was drilled on before the game. In attack - play from the side of the hall, move onto the ball, use the floor, take your choices. In defence - don't overcommit and chase down the loose balls especially in collect. Suffice to say we tried to follow the plan, encouraged by vocal support from Sue, Steve, Ian, Emma and Ben on the sidelines we fought hard. Ed and Sarah in particular we're picking up loose balls in defence but Adam, Jane, Kathy and Dom were having a harder time getting the ball in the basket and keep getting tangled around the post or intercepted by the long supernova limbs. But they did get through leaving Ed, Sarah, Julia and Simon to fight it out for their goals. The whole games was pretty neck and neck and the advice at half time was to keep going, and focus more of using the players' weaknesses to our benefit and cut out silly mistakes. Everybody went out hard, particularly focused on getting the timing of the feed right. There was a few penalties that resulted from that, but supernova kept up and the game was going to the wire. Zu came on for Dom to give his player something new to think about and we held it. The team will be pleased to have come through, and will hopefully have more goals stored up for the final game against Bec tomorrow evening. Not only that, but Ben & Emma were having a nightmare journey as the Northern Line was not running, and they had to find an alternative route, however, they hoped they would arrive in time, but couldn’t be sure. Thankfully they made it with 5 minutes to spare aided by a very helpful taxi driver. Not a good start really, as also Kerry had aggravated an old knee injury, but was keen to start the game to see how things went. So the match started with Ben, Mark, Kerry & Emma in defence, leaving Vicky, Sam, Martin & Ian in attack. We knew that we didn’t have anything riding on this game, other than our pride, but we all wanted to put in a good performance to finish on, partly for ourselves, but also for the club as there were much of the 4ths and 2nds on the side-line providing encouragement and support. Things got off to a slow start and it was clear from the offset that the floor was going to play a major part of this game as players from both teams, were having difficulty staying on their feet in some areas of the hall. We managed to get 2-0 up, and were really controlling a lot of the play both in defence and attack, but the ball was having a few problems going through the basket, despite there being quite a few shots going up. Sadly, Kerry’s knee problem, forced her to finish her game mid-way through the 1st half, and she was replaced by Julie Green, who had already played a whole game for the 4ths. The 1st half continued very low scoring, but we were in control. We got 2 more goals before half time, but conceded 1, to end the 1st half 4-1 up. Ian mentioned a few things at half time (as usual - lol) to work on in the 2nd half, but mainly about trying to use a bit more of the space in such a same hall, and hopefully, we’d score a few more goals. Happily that is exactly what happened. We dominated the half totally with goals going in from everywhere, whilst maintaining a virtually impregnable defence, and we finished the game with a winning score of 14-2. A few highlights being Emma’s goal from the feed (a few pointers from Sue & Steve Wright on that one from the side-lines): Mark's 4 goals, seemingly scoring at will: Vicky’s 2 goals plus gaining 2 penalties: Martins penalty accuracy – scoring 3 and then adding to his tally with a goal from “down-town”. Also to be noted is the dominating work done by everyone in defence. The opposition really didn’t know how to get through. A single low-light being the injury to Kerry - we all hope that you recover from that quickly, Kerry, but don't come back too early and make it worse... All in all, this was a superb team performance to finish the season on. Well done all today, and also to those who have played with us in the 3rds this season. Not sure how accurate this is, so please feel free to add more detail or correct as necessary. With the floor providing as much opposition as the other team Croydon 4 found themselves in a challenging match up, one they were equal to from the very first whistle. I missed the first couple of goals finding Charlotte a plaster but after a couple of minutes I returned to find the scores level at 1-1, but from that point on Croydon took control. Moving the ball round with ease and creating good scoring opportunities the blues soon raced into the lead. The half progressed and the goals were flying mostly from Croydon hands with Aish and Wright (Steve) looking like they were in a mood to score. By half time the away side were in a dominant positon enjoying a 4-9 lead. Stand in coach for the afternoon Mills praised the side highlighting their good recycling in the ball to generate multiple shot attacks as a major factor in their healthy lead. The team went back into the second half under instructions to continue where they left off, relax and to enjoy the final 25. The second half indeed saw both teams relax, while never really slowing down both teams seemed to cancel each other out, with the two teams scoring just 4 more goals before the final whistle. Aish notched up his 4th, the Wright's combined to put away 5 between them and Feakins could count herself to be extremelely unlucky not to have got more than the one beaut she put into the basket. By the final whistle Croydon had won the second half 1-3 giving them a comfortable looking 5-12 victory. A great team display which sets the 4ths up nicely for their final game of the season in a couple of weeks time.
