Rocky start to the season for CroydonThe summer had seen Croydon with a new coach, new recruits and fresh lighting at Royal Russell, so the club were ready for the new England Korfball season. With all Croydon teams in action at Royal Russell, the new look first team was the final match of the day against the young team of Tornadoes. In first attack was Ross, Kim and debutants, Toby and Chelsie, leaving Captain Andy, Vernon, Susan and Becki in defence. Player-coach Ross opened up the scoring for Croydon followed by a penalty by Susan to bring the scores level at 2-2. Tornadoes then dominated extending their lead without reply to 11-2 by some slack defending by Croydon. Another penalty, this time by Ross, then a lovely drop off the back by Andy and great run in by Toby (opening his Croydon account) increased the Croydon score which was matched by some great shooting by Tornadoes. A couple of long shots and a couple more penalties took the half time score to 9-15. With the second half underway...only a long shot from down town by Susan broke the 7 unanswered goals from the visitors. Croydon had some great spells of attack and recycled the ball well gaining the 5th penalty of the match which Ross duly converted. Another run in for Toby and long shot for Susan increased our tally. Jane and Nigel replaced Becki and Vernon during the latter stages of the second half. A cracking long shot from Nigel and a lovely shot from Chelsie (also opening her Croydon account) which saw the ball bounce twice off the top of the basket before eventually dropping to take the score to 15-31. With time running out, the free-flowing scoring continued with another couple of goals from each side, taking the final score to 17-34 in favour of the team from Kent. Overall not a great start for the new look Croydon team but the number of goals and some of the attacking are positives to take from this match as well as Toby and Chelsie getting their debuts out the way. Sharpness in defence, including not conceding countless penalties, is a key area to put right in the games ahead. In first attack we had the experienced section of Nigel, Jane, Grace and Pete. In first defence we had new captain Simon, Jules, Kathy and Dom. It was a pretty even start to the game. There were several rusty errors in the first game of the season. Lots of misplaced passes and several defended shots (mainly from Dom) but Croydon were defending quite well and led 5-3 at one stage. All was still to play for at 8-6 at half time. The 'experienced' half continued to defend well and the other half also defended strongly. But in attack both ends continued to pick the wrong pass or take the wrong shots. Supernova were recycling better and got some good long shots. Croydon continued to work hard but couldn't find the basket. Simon suffered what looked to be cramp but carried on, even with a limp, well that was until he hit his head on the back wall, and the game was brought to a slightly early close with the home side losing 10-12. So the second team battled well and got and improved result on last season, but at the end of the day to win more games they need to take more chances and get more goals. But a good few positives to take from the game too (3 hat-tricks, grace playing the full game after injury, no new injuries, no missed penalties (just one disallowed), not many penalties given away and good spirit shown by all). Hopefully not to be repeated players coming out of the team on Thursday and Saturday, but we did it woo hoo first game and first win!! Starting in attack was Anna, Keri, Martin and Steve C (isn't he glad he trained on Thursday) leaving defense of Hannah D (we have another Hannah in Croydon now), Paul J, Phil and I. Think Anna scored 2 running in shots so we changed well I don't know so forget that! we used our experience to play the ball around, did more good passing than bad, scored our chances and missed a few but did retain the ball. Keri and Phil slotted in nicely although Phil (as usual, said with a smile) was shot happy, his best goal was as Paul moaned NO! I don't think we had any penalties if so we missed, Anna missed her free throw tut tut and I don't think we gave any penalties away or if we did I'll blame Dom (ref)- but Dom as you did an alright job it couldn't be your fault For the league winners a great start, I hope you all enjoyed the game and lets see whose in the team next week.... x Match Report by Lorna Final Score: Croydon 3 9 vs 4 Supernova 2P Aish (1)M James (1)P Jeanes (1)S Chadd (0)A Jeanes (3)H Robinson (2)K Akif (1)L MacKay-Elliott (0)Submitted by Lorna on 13 Oct 13Burr family match Nomads score in comfortable winCroydon 4 started the new season with some old heads but also some youngsters in the team. However, it is fair to say that the average age of the Nomads team was far higher and youthful exuberance won the day. The starting line up was Sarah W, Janine (making her debut) Alex and Bryan whilst Julie, Charlotte, Jon and David were in first defence. First to score was Alex and for the rest of the half Croydon were the dominant team. Many shots went up and hit the basket but what was particularly pleasing was that there was almost always a collect and the attack went for several phases. Conversely Nomads attacks were short and Croydon defended well out of defence, making life very difficult for them. By half time Alex had notched another and, not to be outdone, Bryan had also slotted one home with Jon getting a running in shot to make it 4-1 by the interval. The second half was more of the same with Croydon speeding to an 8-2 lead, courtesy again of the father and son act but also a couple from David from close range.Nomads pegged 3 back towards the end but the result was never in doubt. In the second half in particular Janine found herself in lots of space and rattled the basket and Julie intercepted well and went close. Charlotte was dominant in her collect and Sarah had several shots which could have gone in. If there was a criticism of the team it was that the boys hogged all the goals but it was a great team effort. Bring on...
