Croydon 1 blown away on a blustery SundayCroydon 1 travelled to Trinity with a strong side and led out in attack with Chelsea, Kim, Toby and Coach Ross while Jane, Becki, Nigel and Andy started first defence. Trojans took a quick 2-0 lead before Becki pulled one back from 6 metres. The home side then scored again before Ross converted a penalty to make it 3-2. Trojans then scored 4 unanswered goals before Ross used his strength to hold off his opponent to convert Kim’s pass from a good feed position. Trojans then took the score to 10-3 before another converted penalty by Ross closed the gap slightly. Andy then found himself in space down the right hand side of the hall and buried a peach from 7 metres then when Toby converted from the same distance from the opposite side to make it 11-6 it looked like Croydon were well in with a chance. Unfortunately for the away side and all their travelling supporters Trojans were clever enough to exploit Croydon’s front defence. They were incredibly accurate when shooting from the back of the court and scored a further 5 goals only broken up by one Ross penalty to make the half time score 16-7 to the home side. Trojans started the second half how they finished the first and raced in to a 22-7 lead. Susan’s clever reverse bounce pass to set up Toby with a runner gave the away crowd something to cheer about however the home side went from strength to strength and it was only a missed penalty that prevented Trojans from scoring an impressive 30 goals. The final score was 29-8 to the league champions. It was a cagey start to the game with neither side scoring within the first 6 minutes of play. Johan seemed keen to make an impression against his former side but as a result gave away a free pass then a penalty which Simon converted to make it 0-1 to the away side. Trojans responded instantly to level the score but Susan popped up with one from 4 metres to take the lead once again. Coach Ross called an early time out and the focus was on the end playing against the three. He encouraged them to put their shots up but to make ground when not in possession. Trojans scored a drop off and Sarah’s one handed runner was soon cancelled out when Trojans converted a free pass to level the scores at 3-3. Number 11 for Trojans then scored twice in quick succession to take the score to 5-3 before Simon’s drop off and Sarah’s effort from 6 metres levelled the scores once again. The away side were struggling to use the extra man advantage but eventually Vernon found his range and scored 4 from the 4 metre mark which started to take the game away from Trojans. Sarah was forced to retire with an ankle injury which changed the dynamics of the game and meant it was 4 vs 3 at both ends. Anna and Ed worked hard at each end then Simon made the score 7-10 before scoring a runner of Anna’s feed to make the score 7-11 to Croydon. Trojans would not lie down though and kept coming back but another runner from Simon and another 4 metre shot from Vernon saw the score reach 10-13 before Steve Jones won a penalty which he duly converted to seal the game as a thoroughly well deserved 11-14 victory to the away side. It was a spirited performance and MVP could have gone to a number of players however Vernon just shaded it for keeping his cool under pressure and converting his chances when it really mattered. Disappointing to see the home side start with 7 players especially when they had a player on the sidelines for much of the game, indeed he entered the fray when Trojans appeared to be getting back into it but justice was done. Most of us met outside with the question where is the venue?! but we found it, with Hannah wondering where we all were as she was inside thinking where's the team and this week we even had lots of supporters!! What a game to watch as we nearly didn't win... Steven G was captain and chose to attack with Annie, Kerry and Martin leaving defence as Adam, Hannah, Paul and myself. The hall is small with everyone nearly being pulled up for crossing over the half way line and I thought hot like a sauna. Bromley scored first with a cracking long shot from their best player (he scored 5 of their goals) but Annie wasn't having any messing and scored straight after, well done!! To ease the game Paul and Hannah then scored! meaning all change but our starting attack despite shouts from our defence seemed to be rushing and throwing up shots without the collect, defended shots and lack of structure. We in defence then let in 2 goals but Hannah then scored giving us the lead again only to see it slip to a draw and even after Martin's penalty just before half time the whistle was blown at 5 all... Half time talk of relaxing, shot selection and thinking about playing in a small hall may have made a difference but probably not as the score line continued with matching goals either side. None of our passes were bad, our collections started to be done with two hands and we did attack at a slower pace so maybe the talk was beneficial? Bromley scored first again but Paul tired of his boy scoring showed that he can shoot long too. Martin worked hard for a running in. Bromley levelled again and Adam as a reward for all his effort scored! Again we let Bromley in the game 8-8 time for Martin to continue with his running, jumping on every bit the pitch and score again( I had pointed out at half time his sister was over to see him play and Sam so he had to play well) Final whistle 9 - 8 to us, a close game with work but us all take away points is structure and shot selection. Thank you to everyone who supported and I hope you enjoyed a nail biting game. Fingers crossed it's an easier game next week, the Bromley youngsters are a team to watch though.
