Too little too late as Trojans 2 edge out Croydon 2

There were a couple of changes to the Croydon 2 lineup from last week, with Lorna Elliot coming in for Susan Wright and Ed Chaney playing for Vernon Ellis.

The new additions slotted into the team in the same divisions which meant Elliot played with K Swygart, Mills and Omar, whilst Chaney joined Stevens, E Swygart and Jeanes.

Both teams looked like they could score, but it was the fire power of ex-Croydon player Tobey Clarke who started the brightest, scoring for new club Trojans. Croydon weren't about to lie down and give up though, despite Clarke's speed and ability to slot the ball home.

Croydon worked the ball around the sections, using the strengths of their individual players to cancel out the Trojans players. Chaney did a fine job around the post, and managed to score a couple of goals as well. Stevens had a tough job in attack, keeping the ever on the move Clarke under wraps, but he came into his own when Clarke was subbed, and Stevens scored a peach of a running in shot. E Swygart scored a hattrick, and worked to smother her player in defence, putting in another impressive performance.

Up the other end, Elliot and K Swygart worked hard together to squeeze the opposition girls and contain their fire power. Mills and Omar shared the post work, and took their shots as well, recycling the ball well, and both getting on the scoresheet.

All in all there were some real positives and the team continues to develop which bodes well for the future.

Experienced Croydon 3 too strong for Bec youth!

With the getaway driver on standby Vernon, Sarah and Emma were only 6 minutes late for the start getting from the 1st team game at Ernest Bevin. With Vernon, Stephen, Emma and Janine in first attack it was the team in blue that struck first. Emma found a feed for Vernon to bury his runner for 0-1. The second goal was similar but this time Emma's feed set up Stephens runner for 0-2. Bec struck back with a runner to make it 1-2 then continued to attack well with three temporarily due to an injury! Another girl runner to level things at 2-2. Vernon scored from 3 metres for 2-3 then got another from under the post, 2-4. Bec worked hard and it was their girls who found their range. Good shot made it 3-4 before Mark fed Sarah's runner for 3-5. A nice over pass from Emma assisted Janine to finish well from 5 metres for her first competitive goal for the 3s to make it 3-6. Stephen then got one from 2 metres and Sarah fed marks runner to take a half time lead of 3-8.

After the break Pete's penalty made it 3-9 then Vernon from under the post took it to 3-10. Stephens runner took it to 3-11 before Bec struck back with a drop off to make it 4-11. Charlotte deservedly scored a penalty as she had been unlucky to have 2 goals ruled out as defended. A slight break in play while Andy rounded up the kids before the final whistle brought an end to proceedings at 4-12. Good result and well played all! MVP was a difficult decision however I'm giving it to Charlotte for her perseverance.

Tough day for Croydon 5

The fifth team, aided by a number of 4th teamers and Swans started their season’s campaign with a difficult match against seasoned opposition. Despite a valiant work ethic, and good attacking and defensive efforts we were unfortunately simply outclassed.

In first attack were David, Graig, Hannah and Jocelyn, with Bryan, Alex, Wendy and Jessica in defence.

Becs started the first attack slotting in two drop-off shots fairly quickly, despite our good defensive work.

In attack we were able to make a number of chances, but in the first half we were still finding our feet as Becs gradually increased their lead, to end the half 7-0.

A half time team-talk from Ben changed our focus slightly, putting more emphasis on a defensive approach, given their player’s height and strength advantages.

Both Croydon sections continued to work hard in attack and defence, recycling the ball effectively when in attack.

We had several more chances in the second half to get off the mark, and it was Jocelyn who finally gave us that elusive goal (unfortunately our only goal of the match), a curved running in shot, nicely put away.

In summary, a good team effort against better opposition. Final score 14-1 to Becs.

Thanks to Emma for her help taking notes, and the 4ths and Swans for supplying players.
