Result still pending in fiery Croydon - Bec 2 encounterCroydon 1 travelled to Ernest Bevin looking to start 2015 as they ended 2014 and continue their impressive unbeaten run. Knowing that a win would take them top of the London regional league it was important that they got off to a strong start. With Bradford, Pratt B, Pratt D and James in attack that is what Croydon got with a cheeky reverse runner from James. Withers, Hudspith, Codd and Driver looked solid in defence and limited Bec to one shot attacks until a good shot from 6 metres made it 1-1. Driver scored from 3 metres before Hudspith converted the penalty he won for 1-3. Pratt D from 2m made it 1-4 however a series of one shot attacks from Croydon allowed Bec to pull one back. A nice drop off from Codd made it 2-5 before instant reply again made it 3-5. A Bec runner pulled them to within one then another from 4M took scores level at 5 a piece. Hudspith out smarted his opponent for 5-6 then missed pens at either end started a run of scrappy play. Bec again struck back to level the score before Pratt B scored a drop off. Bradford buried a runner as the half time whistle blew with the score 6-8 in the away sides favour. Driver got the ball rolling again with cries of "remember last game" in the hope she would rediscover the form that saw her get 4 against Croydon 2. Bec pegged another back to stay within touching distance before Pratt B from 2m and a Bec runner took it to 8-10. Bec converted a penalty to go within 1 once again and it was game on! Hudspith converted another pen at his end and Pratt D did the same to take the score to 9-12. Bec from 5 metres then again from 4 pulled it back to 11-12. Scores went level before James from 3 opened the lead up again. Bec drop off for 13 all then 13-14 with another Hudspith penalty. A converted free pass took scores level as the game really started to warm up! Final 10 minutes of the game and once again Croydon edged ahead with a Pratt D penalty. Pratt D scored again with a drop off for 14-16 before Bec came back once again. Some nice sportsmanship from Pratt D was warmly applauded by both sets of fans before some excellent hustling by Croydon closed the game out 15-16. But wait.... having shaken hands, written out the match form and started to take their kit off the Croydon 1 players were called back on as P Allen, there assessing the referee informed him that there were a further 3 and half minutes more to play. The referee called both teams back on and it was only ever going to go one way from there. Bec played with nothing to lose and Croydon couldn't regain their composure. Bec scored to make it 16-16 then with a minute left James had his goal ruled out for cutting to rub salt into the wound. There will be some decisions to be made by the LKA however win or draw CKC1 remain unbeaten this season and sit pretty at the top of the Regional League. Croydon 3 took on an unbeaten Bec 3 team at Ernest Bevin following an impassioned first team game. Both teams were eager to start and in first attack was Dom, Adam, Sarah and Charlotte with Kerry, Mark, Ed and Vicky in defence. Bec appeared to switch into gear a little quicker than Croydon and used this to their advantage, scoring 4 unanswered goals. Croydon responded by some nice attacking play which paid off when Dom scored a long shot to make it 4-1. Croydon were creating lots of shooting chances with all players working hard and supporting each other. However, a penalty converted from Bec, extended them to a 4 goal lead. Croydon had began to relax and were passing the ball around well and this paid off as a lovely long shot from Mark went in and Dom scored a runner from Sarah’s feed, meaning that the half time score was 6-3. After a half time talk, both teams came back and were attacking aggressively and creating chances to shoot. Penalties were awarded and converted by both teams to make it 8-4. Croydon recycled the ball well and Charlotte and Adam both worked tirelessly at the post but it was Bec who were showing greater accuracy and scored making it 9-4. Croydon continued to put on the pressure and forced Bec to make errors resulting in a penalty calmly took and converted by Dom. Mark’s section attacked well with Vicky and Kerry putting up lots of shots enabling Mark to drop off and score making it 9-6. Unfortunately Bec quickly responded and when the ref blew the final whistle the score was 10-6 to the home team. A good performance from the whole team and hopefully Ed’s calf will be ok for the next game. Sadly this proved to be costly mistake as Bec 5 took control from the off. Having said that the 1st defence had the much tougher opposition I am pleased to say that they gave as good as they got rattling the oppo. with their own physical play. With a risky instruction to give long shots a go with no collects present again proved to be a mistake although both sections did get shots off which I feel would not of been taken had the traditional collect been waited for. Although the score line shows a very one sided match it was far from the case with the lack of experience playing as a team, lack of accuracy and lack of speed in seeing opportunities also contributing to our low score. Another major contributing factor was the loss of the opponent me being the worst culprit again. All negative so far so time for some praise in the main part all played above the normal level raising their individual games considerably in the second half during which Tom managed to sink two goals and in the other section Craig managed to get one. All the goals came again from our increased use of the space available creating better shooting positions. Paul, Laura and Hannah all supported each other exceeding well moving far more creating space and it for this reason that MVP goes to Laura who created loads of opportunities and using them sadly without the result she deserved. Once more MVP was a very close call between all the ladies as they fought particularly hard managing a large proportion of the successful collects. In the other section thankfully my elbows stayed clear of Emily who along with Sarah and Craig put in a some good moves again creating space, again without the deserved result. Having said all of this had winning the match been about hitting the rim we would have walked it!!! Many thanks to all of the team. Enjoy the long break, practice, and come back more hungry for a win against the Swans in February. As usual if anyone has anything else to add please do so.Match Report by David | Updated by David Previous photo Next photo1 of 5 Final Score: Bec 5 14 vs 3 Croydon 4T Raffield (2)C Stevens (1)D Hughes (0)P Westbury (0)E Dean (0)S Hole (0)L Lambird (0)H Raffield (0)Submitted by David on 11 Jan 15
