Croydon 1 left in the wake of TornadoesFeeling confident (the scoreline couldn’t be as huge as last week could it?), Croydon went into the match with all good intentions, with Marc, Andy, Hannah and Kathy in first attack, and Stephen, Ed, Kim and Sarah in first defence. Within minutes we were down by several goals before Stephen slotted in a beautiful penalty. Goals followed, but mainly from the opposition, although Croydon players took a decent amount of shots. Unfortunately, Tornadoes tall boys meant a lot of one shot attacks from us, and their zippy girls meant a lot of free shots for them! A stern half time talk by coach Colin inspired Croydon – defence was tightened and we were more aware of our passes. Highlights include Simon Pavey subbing on and scoring his first National League goal, a hat trick from Stephen and Ed’s relentless energy (to collect, feed, shoot, run, jump, intercept…) Seeking other players thoughts on who MVP should be given to, it was really positive to hear 4 different names be given. The game ended 27-7 - a disappointing result which Croydon could have perhaps made more of. Croydon 2 went 4 goals up, but were pegged back by a hard working Supernova. Supernova then went ahead. But Croydon would not give up. It was close to ending a draw, but Zoe had other ideas and sunk the winning goal, and the game was in the bag. It was a beauty of a shot too, from distance. We started with attack of Dom, Steve, Sarah H and Hannah with Craig, Ian, Charlotte and Jane in first defence. The game started with Steve finding some space to take the lead with a good running in shot and after a good spell in defence down the other end, Supernova also earned a running in shot to level the score. Moving into attack. Jane snatched the lead with a short distance shot. The game progressed with both teams working hard in attack and defence but unable to get on the scoresheet. Craig particularly mastered his player who ran the block fighting for collection with Ian and Charlotte picking up any stray passes. Craig while in attack got a shortish shot to extend our lead. Supernova were playing a good front defence marking the ball lines and cutting out the feeds which made our initial attacks short. Thankfully the defence of Ian, Craig, Charlotte and Jane were holding firm. Hannah then left her player standing with a burst of speed across the feed and scored a peach of a shot that didn’t even touch the sides. This took us into a 4-1 lead at half time. After an inspiring talk from Dom and tactical advice from Ian, the second half started and with Steve giving a bad pass meant for Dom which hit the post and he was surprised to find that it had rebounded back to himself and with time to think, shot and scored a short shot. SN responded straight away with a quick long shot before Jane followed suit with another from long distance. Remembering Ian’s advice at half time, both sections started to play less post focused and found more space. Dom controlled the post well bagging a short shot with good all round attacking by Hannah and Sarah with Steve in the feed Dom grabbed another short distance shot after attacking his player. Tiredness set in for both sections working hard in defence before Charlotte scored with a cheeky shot off the post to make it a 9-2 and comfortable lead (or so we thought!). SN came back at us with a flurry of goals 4 long shots despite our good defence. Our attacking again went to a more direct route but got better to when we reverted to playing it around. We dug in as a team when the scores got close with both sections shutting their players out. SN grabbed a short shot near the end, but our defence as a team saw us out as eventual winners. Final score 9-7. Thank you to those that stepped up into the team seamlessly. Ben, Leo, Jocelyn and Amy started in attack and Roger, Joe, Lindsey and Emma in defence. The swans made a strong start with Ben scoring from Jocelyn's feed, the favour was then returned when Jocelyn converted a runner from a feed by Ben. The game was in the Swans' favour when Roger scored 3 - including a running in shot from Emma's feed and a long shot from about 4metres. Joe scored 1 followed by another 2 from Ben in the first half. The second half was fast and the swans battled hard in defence to keep recycling the ball, Joe sank one of his trademark one handers and Amy had a couple of unfortunate shots bounce out of the Korf. Amy battled hard in collect and Lindsey and Joe worked well on getting the ball back to the attack. Nomads battled hard throughout, however it was a penalty taken by Ben which finished the game at 12-2. Thanks to Nomads for travelling to Croydon and providing a good game.
