Croydon 2 find test too tough against international Trojans 2 team

Following a heavy defeat at the hands of Bec last week, the fixture list threw another massive challenge Croydon's way as they faced up to another title contender in the shape of Trojans 2. Kitted up in their white change strip Croydon lined up with Dom Bradford (c), Hannah Robinson, Adam Stevens and Ren Williamson in first attack; while Kathy Bradford, Simon Mills, Laura Nicholls and Andy Withers started in defence.

It took the seconds until the second half to register their first goal last week and captain Dom was obviously determined to avoid a repeat as he struck within the first minute to give Croydon a very early albeit short lived lead. Sadly that would be the only time Croydon had the advantage as a very strong Trojans outfit kicked into gear and were soon scoring with abandon. It was a familiar flow to the previous week as the home side netted 20 goals by the time the half time whistle had sounded, though as least this time there were a few goals on the other side of the scoreboard.

The second half failed to provide much joy as the Trojan goal machine ticked by and with greater pressure being applied in their defence Croydon were finding it difficult to create too many clear chances. Craig Stevens replaced son Adam three quarters of the way through due to injury and acquitted himself well against such difficult opposition. By the full time whistle Croydon were well beaten 39-6 and to add further injury to insult Mills also hobbled off the pitch after the game.

It has been a difficult opening couple of weeks for Croydon 2. The fixture computer was not kind as they were thrown up against the two potential best teams in the league, bolstered by players of international calibre without a National League fixture. A lot of work is needed but surely things can only get better in the coming weeks!

CKC3 make hard work of pleasant early morning game

Following 5 defeats on week 1, CKC3 were keen to take advantage of the early 9.30am start and register the first Croydon victory for season 2016/17. This was going to be no easy task against a Mitcham side who were playing Regional League korfball last season. Despite the fact it was a very different side from last week it seems CKC3 had learnt from their mistakes. The movement was far better and while the opposition were all very tall and athletic it was the passing and moving of the CKC players that proved most effective. CKC3 went in to half time with a 7-3 lead and looked very comfortable. The second half continued in the same vein with CKC3 racing to a 10-4 lead and the game looked over. With 15 minutes to go the wheels completely came off. CKC were not longer clinical in front of the korf and were missing easy chances. The movement slowed down and Mitcham started to find their range. They scored 5 unanswered goals and took the game to a nail biting end. CKC had just enough to hold on but some lessons to learn.

Strong defence, stronger attack, 1st win of the season for 5ths

Short trip this week to a shiny new sports centre in Bromley. Croydon lined up with Jon, Phil, Sarah and Alice in attack, and Callum, Adam, Jade and Lorna in defence. As always memory is a little vague however:

Sarah scored a running in shot after a couple of sighters from distance, Bromley quickly responded with a running in shot of their own. 1-1. A change of ends and after a couple of good attacks for both teams, Lorna and Adam got on the score sheet with runners to establish a lead that would not be relinquished.

The young Bromley team attacked well at both ends of the court and kept Croydon's defence on its toes. Eventually they scored a runner, and Sarah quickly responded with a penalty after being tripped on a running in shot.

Interceptions galore from Phil and John, and great work nullifying the fed by Alice ably being covered by Sarah then became a running theme for that section. That said the scoreboard kept ticking over and the half ended 7-5 I think.

The halftime aim was to extend the lead to 4 goals and the second half started well for Croydon with Phil getting on the scoreboard. Bromley replied but two more goals from Adam and Lorna got the four goal cushion required.

From then on, the aim was controlled defence, and good use of ball in attack. And that is exactly what was produced. Even though there was still ten or fifteen minutes left, the result was locked down. Sarah got one more goal and a Bromley player scored a running shot, but it never felt like a comeback was on the cards.

Jade and Callum created plenty of shooting opportunities as their players tired, but unfortunately no goals to show for their efforts.

Special mention to Jon and Phil at this point whose opposite numbers were full of intelligent, and quick(!) runs. They got no change for all of their efforts due to great one on one defence and communication for switches.

Overall a very satisfying team performance to be apart of, and a well deserved win.
