Croydon Eagles u9s narrowly lose to Trojans u9s

Croydon Eagles (u9s) took to the pitch, having watched their fellow players in the Hawks team, and they had obviously seen what they needed to do.

The Eagles team of Oscar, Joy, Charlotte and Emily put 100% into their game, against players who were all bigger and older than themselves. They didn't let that bother them though, they raced up and down the pitch, attacking with the ball, and defending hard when Trojans had the ball,

The team really did work together, causing problems for the Trojans team who were often prevented from attempting to score by some quick thinking and fast footwork from the Eagles team, gaining defended decisions from the referee.

The match was tense throughout, and although Trojans won the match 2-1, it was a great effort from all the players.

Croydon Eagles (u9s) fight for a draw against Trojans u9s

Croydon Eagles (u9s) second match against the second Trojans u9s team was as tense and hard fought as the first one.

Joy and Emily were almost a blur as they ran tirelessly from one end of the pitch to the other. Their passing and catching was excellent as was their defending. They managed to get round their players to be post-side and prevent the Trojans players from shooting.

Oscar took advantage of his small size to zip past players, and as they weren't looking for him he could get into a defended position without being noticed.

Charlotte attacked with great skill passing the ball well with other players and moving speedily up the pitch to get into good shooting positions.

The team was helped by some of the Croydon u11s who had stayed to watch the match, and this seemed to boost the young u9s, and give them the energy they needed to hold Trojans to a 1-1 draw.

Thanks to all the players, parents, coaches and supporters from both Croydon teams and from Trojans teams. We look forward to seeing you all in the next round of matches in one month's time.

Also a big thanks to Simon Mills for reffing all the u9 and the u11 matches.

Croydon Hawks (u9s) lose out to stronger Trojans u9s

In the first London Korfball Association (LKA) under 9 match of the new season, Croydon Hawks (u9s) took on the might of Trojans u9s.

The Croydon team consisted of Yazzie, Adil, Zuhayr, Maisie and Annabelle. All these players are in year 3 and this was their first match together. Some of the players had only been to 2 training sessions and were playing against an experienced Trojans team who were predominately bigger and stronger.

The Croydon team fought hard to make passes and to stop the Trojans players from scoring, but despite their best efforts, Trojans experience showed through and they scored well to lead throughout the match.

Much credit goes to the Croydon Hawks team though who never gave up and kept working hard. They all learnt as they went along and showed real spirit.

Croydon Hawks (u9s) earn draw against Trojans u9s

In Croydon Hawks (u9s) second match against the second Trojans u9s team, the young Croydon players showed just how much they had learnt from the first match, by holding Trojans to a draw.

Maisie and Annabelle combined well to make intercepts and get the ball away from the Trojans players. Yazzie showed her strength with some good, long, accurate passes whilst Adil and Zuhayr used their speed to find space to receive the ball, and pass it on.

All the players were quick to get back to defend when Trojans did get the ball, and this helped prevent Trojans from having the chance to score.

Thanks to the Croydon u11s who stayed behind to assist the u9 teams.

Croydon u11+ score against Nomads u11+

Croydon and Nomads travelled to Trinity on Sunday to play in the first London Korfball Association (LKA) under 11 fixture of the season. (Matches are scheduled to take place on the second Sunday of each month from now until March.) The referee for the day was the experienced football ref Simon Mills, who did a great job of controlling the flow of the game.

Croydon started their first match with a number of older, experienced players and this showed as they took the lead against a spirited but younger Nomads team.

The sections were: Adam (Reece), Michael, Nicole and Jessica up one end, with Mollie, Kieran, Antonio, and Stephen (Dominic) at the other end.

Croydon's newer, younger players were not to be outdone though, getting themselves on the scoresheet too. The team gelled well, passing the ball around the section and putting up shots when players were free.

Nomads worked tirelessly to snatch the ball from the Croydon players, with many of their players putting in outstanding performances.

The experience and age of the Croydon players showed in this first match though, and with goals from Adam, Michael, Kieren (2) and Reece, the match was won 5-0.

Croydon u11+ held to a draw by Nomads u11+

In the second leg of the Croydon u11s match against Nomads u11s, the match was much more even. Nomads had found their feet and learnt from the first leg. Croydon worked hard to replicate the first half goals, but stuggled to put the ball in the basket.

It was the defence who dominated in this leg, with both sides working hard to prevent shots from being put up close to the basket. This lead to more goals from distance, which didn't go in for either team.

There was a flurry of activity as the end of the leg drew closer, but Croydon players just couldn't find the basket, and Nomads kept the match to a 0-0 draw.

It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic and energetic players playing together, and working as a team. For several of the Croydon team it was their first match at this age group, and they found that with a larger ball and higher basket, it was more difficult to score, but they never gave up, and showed that they are more than ready to compete at u11s.

A big thank you to everyone who turned up to play, to support and to coach, including the opposition.

After both legs the two clubs mixed up their teams and played "orange team" against "green team", which was won by the Green team by 2 goals to 1.
