Croydon clatter Cambridge City in Champs TrophyNerves were tight but confidence was high. With a large squad of 16 guys and girls looking sharp in co-ordinated training tops, Croydon felt ready to take on the challenge and earn their right to play EKL in 2013-14. There was also been more chatter about diet than usual after Johan's tips in the run-up. Coach Jeanes was supported by Steve (who was doubling up as a desk official) and Zu (since he wasn't able to play). Croydon met Cambridge in this competition last time, and each time it had been hard fought. This was no exception, and the game was physical. Luckily captain Hudspith had brought his shooting boots and sunk 3 from down town. Other goals came from well worked team moves and concentrated defence kept Cambridge under control. Hannah came on to offer another option as Susan took a rest. Although it was tighter than the supportive bench or amazing spectators would have liked, Croydon are happy with a job done. Another step closer to the prize. Croydon given a scare by Birmingham CityOne down, three to go. The Croydon team were focused on the job in hand, and having watched earlier games they knew that the Birmingham team were athletic and organised. The Cambridge game was injury free and so coach Jeanes decided to keep with the line up from the first game - Nigel, Ross, Vernon and Andy; Anna, Susan, Grace and Jane. Both teams were feeling the pressure of having an audience and still settling into the large hall. It was tight up to half time, but then Croydon pulled away. The team's experience in EKL last season meant that they were used to the pressurised defence and were confident in selecting their chances and taking the shots under pressure. The ref was also forced to make some decisions and no less 4 of Croydon's goals were from the penalty spot. But Birmingham were not used to being on the loosing side, and they pushed hard until the final whistle, closing the goal lead that Croydon had build up. The bench and the spectators were left shouting themselves hoarse encouraging their team to defend and attack with cool heads. Croydon were pleased with a successful outcome, but credit to Birmingham also who look like a good team.
