Nomads Tournament

Croydon fielded the usual mix of youth and experience for the first summer tournament of the outdoor season. Starring in the constant sunshine were 3 Pratts, 3 Elliotts, 4 Jeanes, crispy Lynda, Jane, Leah, Andy, Zu and there was a fleeting visit by John Dean and Dan Moore.

The day started well with a win over Highbury as most of the team dusted off their long shots and running legs. The next match was no less satisfactory in terms of the score but considerably more dangerous as most of Scorpions team had clearly never played before but seemed to be well acquainted with rugby or, perhaps, British Bulldog. The Rhino got a taste of his own medicine for a change - in one word: "brutal". Next up were Tournadoes and between Dan and Zu's shocking rebound defence, CKC contrived to lose this one. Lastly in the morning pool were Nomads 1 and although the game was quite close, Richie Burrows was on good form against Steve and they won by 2 goals.

All of which left CKC in the 3rd pool for the afternoon and secretly quite pleased to accept, on paper, an easy time of it. And so it proved as all comers were swept aside. First up were Nomads 2 and considering Lynda spent more time chatting than moving, Croydon were pleased to ease away to a comfortable win. Next up were "Poking Welham" and despite Zu letting in an early goal, Croydon wooshed back with some handy goals and the odd dubious pen. Nomads Ma's and Pa's were next fielding some players who had never played before and surprisingly they did better than Nomads 2 but not well enough. All of which left only a rematch with Highbury for the last match. Buoyed by an comfortable win earlier in the day, the team started slowly but soon the North Londoners were sent packing leaving Croydon winners of their afternoon pool. Hurrah.

A great day out for all - the right mix between competitiveness and relaxed fun in the sun. One word of caution though, there were some reports that a certain (soon to be) OAP in the ranks had been replaced for the day by an automaton. Certainly on receipt of the ball all robo-Lynda did was turn and shoot all day. This commentator certainly heard a mechanical voice say "Must catch, must turn, must shoot, missed. Again. Repeat" at one stage. How queer.
